As a recovering addict myself, I'm very well aware that the stigma of addiction is still very much alive and well. This past week in particular gave me several good reminders of this. From having my pharmacist insinuate I'm a thief, ignore and disrespect me, encountering my first very own troll on Twitter intent on reinforcing the stigma, and received some subtle hints that others would prefer if I just moved off the subject of addiction completely - it's been a hell of a week. But my Twitter encounter had me wondering what other stigmas, nasty words and ignorant statements about addicts were being broadcast into the Twitterverse. Preparing myself for the worst, I dove right in!
There were plenty to choose from, ranging vastly in subject and level of ignorance, but I thought I would share a few of my favourite little gems with you. Of course, some of the recent tweets I've come across sadly only perpetuate the stigma of addiction, but instead of continuing to stay silent and ignore it, I thought I'd take a shot at providing some of my own commentary. Here's the shit social media is spewing out this week:
My personal troll expressed her feeling towards my addiction in this very eloquent tweet, complete with hashtag:
I demand a recount! I most definitely have ALL my teeth, and they are beauties!
This Tweeter has it out for a very specific subset of users...but hey, at least he paid a compliment along with it! How nice of him.
This seemed to be a fairly common sentiment... The pathetic addict.
I guess it's time to start throwing myself a big pity party!
According to this insightful Tweeter, not only am I dumb, but I totally deserved all the miserable shit that happened. Thanks for clearing that up!
I would absolutely love to know exactly what a typical Methadone patient looks like. Do I fit the bill?
Refreshing stuff, right? Ugh, excuse me for a moment while I go clean the vomit off my iPad.
